Celebrate the Small Things 8-9-17

This post is part of Lexa Cain's bloghop, Celebrate the Small Things. Head on over there to join up!

So what am I celebrating this week?

I got a box of print copies of my book in the mail.  I've been a published author for some time now, but it wasn't until I actually held a physical copy in my hand that it felt real.  Now to try and sell a few of those puppies!

One of my best friends from when I was twelve is staying with me for the weekend.  We've stayed in touch for over 30 years, despite living on opposite sides of the world for most of that time.  I haven't seen her since the last time I visited the States, way back in 1998!  So I'm looking forward to a weekend of catching up, and getting a chance to finally show her around my city.

Books I've Read: The Land of 10,000 Madonnas

This is one of those books I was excited to read because the blurb made it sound like something I'd really enjoy.  And I did enjoy parts of it.  Just not the whole book.

There are too many POV characters and you don't ever get a chance to get into anyone's head in a real way.  In fact, the only character I felt like I got to know was Jesse, the deceased friend/cousin whose wishes the others are following.  And that was through some writings he left one of his cousins that she guarded jealously through most of the book.

I was also frustrated that none of these characters seemed to want to explore Europe.  They were there!  It was all paid for by someone else.  Yet all they seemed to do was bicker and argue as they tried to follow non-existent clues to someone else's mystery.  It seemed like a missed opportunity.

And the mystery wasn't even really solved.  The ending just kind of fizzed out.

There were some nice moments, but overall, I finished reading this with a kind of 'meh' feeling.  So can't really recommend it.  It wasn't terrible, but I doubt I'll remember much about it in six months time..

But don't just listen to me.  Here's the blurb:

Five teens backpack through Europe to fulfill the mysterious dying wish of their friend.

Jesse lives with his history professor dad in a house covered with postcards of images of the Madonna from all over the world. They’re gotten used to this life: two motherless dudes living among thousands of Madonnas. But Jesse has a heart condition that will ultimately cut his life tragically short. Before he dies, he arranges a mysterious trip to Europe for his three cousins, his best friend, and his girlfriend to take after he passes away. It’s a trip that will forever change the lives of these young teens and one that will help them come to terms with Jesse’s death.

Weekly Goals 8-9-17

I made a little progress on a book that needs some tightening last week, so my goal this week is to keep going with that.  It doesn't need any really big changes, so I hope to get through at least another six-eight chapters.  Maybe more....

At work, I think things may calm down a little this week, so I will have a chance to catch up on some of the tasks that always slip while we're in a crazy period.  I'd like to at least be able to file some emails!

I started building a website over the weekend, and would like to finish that this week too.  I've never had one before, just this blog.  It might be time to change that!  But we will see...

Celebrate the Small Things 1-9-17

This post is part of Lexa Cain's bloghop, Celebrate the Small Things. Head on over there to join up!

So what am I celebrating this week?

It's the weekend!  Have you ever had one of those weeks when you've been wrong about what day it is and it's thrown the whole week out of whack?  I was certain it was Wednesday on Tuesday, and that made me horrendously disappointed when I woke up on Friday and realised it wasn't in fact the weekend.

It's been a busy week at work, but I managed to get a lot of stuff done and off my desk.  Next week things should calm down a little and I'm hoping to get through some of the small things that have been piling up on my desk while I waded through all the big stuff.

I made some progress with editing a book that needs a few tweaks, so I'm happy about that.  More to come in the week ahead.

I heard from an old friend and she is planning to come and visit in the next couple of weeks.  We haven't seen each other since 1998 and we've been friends since we were in 5th grade so I'm looking forward to it.  It's only going to be a weekend, so I will have to plan where to take her carefully.  Fingers crossed the weather will improve.  It hasn't stopped raining all week.

Books I've Read: Now I Rise

I was so excited to read this book.  I absolutely loved And I Darken and devoured the whole thing in a single day.

I didn't love this so much...

Don't get me wrong.  It's still a compelling read, but because so much of the book is focused on war and intrigue, there isn't a lot of room for the characters to grow and change the way they did in the first book.  And while Radu and Lada are in different places, fighting different wars, the brutality is the same for them both.

Neither spend much time with Mehmed who was the centre of both their worlds in the first book, and the chemistry of those relationships is missing here.  In fact, it's relationships in general that are missing.  Lada is a lone wolf who trusts virtually no one, even her own soldiers.  And Radu goes into Constantinople as a spy, so is therefore forced to keep himself at arms length from anyone other than his fake wife (who remains my favourite character).

So while this is an action-packed read, it isn't nearly as compelling as I had hoped it would be.  Fingers crossed the third part of the trilogy will pick up the relationship action alongside the battles and political intrigue.

But don't just listen to me.  Here's the blurb:

She has no allies. No throne. All she has is what she’s always had: herself.

After failing to secure the Wallachian throne, Lada Dracul is out to punish anyone who dares to cross her blood-strewn path. Filled with a white-hot rage, she storms the countryside with her men, accompanied by her childhood friend Bogdan, terrorizing the land. But brute force isn’t getting Lada what she wants. And thinking of Mehmed brings little comfort to her thorny heart. There’s no time to wonder whether he still thinks about her, even loves her. She left him before he could leave her.

What Lada needs is her younger brother Radu’s subtlety and skill. But Mehmed has sent him to Constantinople—and it’s no diplomatic mission. Mehmed wants control of the city, and Radu has earned an unwanted place as a double-crossing spy behind enemy lines. Radu longs for his sister’s fierce confidence—but for the first time in his life, he rejects her unexpected plea for help. Torn between loyalties to faith, to the Ottomans, and to Mehmed, he knows he owes Lada nothing. If she dies, he could never forgive himself—but if he fails in Constantinople, will Mehmed ever forgive him?

As nations fall around them, the Dracul siblings must decide: what will they sacrifice to fulfill their destinies? Empires will topple, thrones will be won…and souls will be lost.

Weekly Goals 28-8-17

After not getting any writing done last week (again), this week I am determined to do some. I have several manuscripts that really only need a final polish before they are ready to be submitted, so this week I plan to drag one of those out and get to work on it.

I'm lucky with this project and one other, in that I have some notes to work with because my agent gave me notes on both manuscripts before we parted ways earlier this year. So this week I intend to address some of those notes. Not all of them, because we didn't see eye to eye on some points, but there are certainly things I do agree with and those things are the ones I'll work on.

I also plan to speak to my ghostwriting project's subject because we're not nearly as far into that book as I would have liked to have been by this point in the year. We need to try and figure out a better way to do interviews so we can keep the momentum going. Ideally I'd like to have the bulk of this project done by November so I can focus on writing something new during NaNo.
