Celebrate the Small Things 13-1-17

So what am I celebrating this week?

I just got back from holiday, so I'm celebrating having a great break. The weather wasn't as stellar as it has been in previous years, but I swam in the sea 7 out of the 10 days.  I also did lots of hiking and spent some time with my sister, her husband and my niece.  They live in Arizona and only come out to New Zealand  every couple of years, so that was nice.

I also went mountain biking for the first time on the tracks in the hills behind the beach house.  I'm not a great mountain biker, I discovered, and my legs are showing the result!  It was fun though.

Yesterday the tides were right for kayaking, so my elder son and I dragged the kayaks down to the estuary.  It was pretty windy and paddling was difficult.  At one point I was trying to stay in one spot while I waited for him to catch up and managed to capsize.  First time I've ever done that!  Luckily the estuary isn't deep, so it was easy enough to climb back in.  Just a little chilly with the wind blowing through my wet clothes.

But all in all, it was a good holiday and I'm feeling refreshed and invigorated to start the new year at work on Monday.  And I have tickets to see Nick Cave (my favorite singer since I was about 13) on Tuesday, so that definitely softens the blow of having to go back to work on Monday.

What are you celebrating this week?

  1. Glad you had such a great holiday. I capsized in my kayak once because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. Fortunately, I was still pretty close to shore—gave everyone on the beach something to laugh at.

    Enjoy Nick Cave! That's exciting!

  2. It sounds like a great time. I went kayaking for the first time last summer and liked it. Have fun at the concert.

  5. Celebrating making a decision to step away from a project that would have undoubtedly led to constant misery while trying to get anything accomplished. People like to say walking away from something is a sign of weakness, but I'd *like* to think it's a sign of sanity.

  6. Back already? Vacations always seem too short, right? I'm glad you did a lot and had a good time with your sister and her family. Wish it had been warmer for you. Enjoy Nick Cave!
