Books I've Loved: Welcome to the Girl Baby Girl!

This is an utterly charming book with twists and turns and characters you just want to move in with.  It's like a nice big plate of your favourite comfort food and one of those books I like to go back and re-read.  Obviously the surprises aren't so surprising when you're re-reading it, but the characters are so much fun, it doesn't really matter if you already know the secrets.

I love the way Flagg manages to introduce so many seemingly unrelated characters in different time periods and make it all tie together so beautifully by the end. And it's funny!  One of those books you can't help but have a smile slapped across your face while you're reading.

So if you're looking for something funny, smart and with some very interesting twists in its tail, look no further...

But don't just believe me, here's the blurb.

Welcome to the World, Baby Girl! is the funny, serious, and compelling new novel by Fannie Flagg, author of the beloved Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (and prize-winning co-writer of the classic movie).

Once again, Flagg's humor and respect and affection for her characters shine forth. Many inhabit small-town or suburban America. But this time, her heroine is urban: a brainy, beautiful, and ambitious rising star of 1970s television. Dena Nordstrom, pride of the network, is a woman whose future is full of promise, her present rich with complications, and her past marked by mystery.

  2. I'm not a huge fan of contemporary stories, but I do like laughing. Might have to try this one out.

  3. Ha, this might be the first one of the books you've reviewed that I've already read! I always loved it, too. I'm not usually into those kinds of stories, but I always love Fannie Flagg.
