Sparkfest #2

It's time for the Sparkfest Blogfest. so for the next few days, I'll be blogging about the things that inspired me to become a writer. Here's the second question to be answered:

What author set off that spark of inspiration for your current Work in Progress?

Now that's a tougher question. I'm not sure there was any single author or book that inspired The Boyfriend Plague. It started with a newspaper article I read a couple of years ago. It outraged me at the time, so kind of stuck in my mind. When these characters started introducing themselves to me around the time I was revising Taillights, it occurred to me that I could use this issue that had made me so angry years before.

So I'm afraid I can't name the author who set off the spark. I'm sure the journalist has a name, but I don't know it. But I can say that a subplot of the book was inspired by Jodi Picoult in a very roundabout way...

What ignited you to write your latest book?

  1. Awesome spark answer. My latest WIP was inspired by a chat on twitter. People were talking LGBT characters in books and a lot of ppl noted there weren't many bi characters. It got me thinking and pretty soon an idea popped into my head.

  4. The Outsiders was a great book. My current WIP was sparked by a line in a Concrete Blonde song and and episode of Babylon5.

  5. My current WIP was inspired by the back blurb of a book, does that count? I can't remember who authored it. Wished I could, so I could give her credit in my story. I think that would be cool. Or would that be a bad thing?

Oh, your newspaper article probably didn't have a writer's name on the byline. Most likely it only had AP for American Press after it went national. Local reporters don't really get enough recognition.

Hey Jolene, are you writing a Pirate story? hehehe

  6. Newspaper articles are great for inspiration. I can't believe some of the stuff that goes on in real life!

  7. They always say the truth is stranger than fiction! Incidentally, I'm a major Jodi Picoult fan, too... :-)

  8. I love it when people don't just settle for rage, but take the time to express their conflicting view with something creative--whether it ends up published or not. Writing is great therapy.

There are a number of modern mindsets that I hope to put a new spin on with my current manuscript, to be sure. It makes things work on a much deeper level, doesn't it? Makes them work, and makes them hard work :)
