Sigh of relief...

It's done!

Yes.  I finally finished my second draft of The Sidewalk's Regrets.  I'm realistic enough to know that's not the end of it, but as of last night, the manuscript is winging its way to two of my beta readers who I know will find all the funky spots and places the story makes no sense.  I can no longer see those things.

The last two days of writing were a dream.  I had to entirely rewrite the ending (about 4 chapters) and it was like the words were already there, embossed on the inside of my eyelids.  All I had to do was type fast enough to catch them as they scrolled by.  I love days like that.  I wish they came more often.

So now I'm in that weird limbo where I'm not sure what to do.  I have two potential projects to work on next.  I could rework my historical story which I have some good ideas for, or I could start planning out the new idea I have which is still just a sketch.

Or I could just take a break for a couple of weeks, but I'm not that great at taking breaks.

What would you do?  Do you jump right into a new project when you finish one, or do you take a rest first?

  1. congrats on the completion. I like to take a day or two off and then start on something new. It can be a new project or an edit, but it needs to be different enough from the last one that I can have some separation. :)

    1. Thanks!

I'll try to take some time off. I'm just not much good at it...

  2. Congratulations on finishing your project. I'd take some time off- go to the spa perhaps- and maybe while you're "relaxing," you can make minor mental notes for your next project.

    1. A spa? Sounds luxurious. I'd love to, but can't afford it. Maybe a hot bath and a glass of wine instead....

  3. Congrats! I'm weird because I like to do my first round of revision immediately. Then I'll work on something else and let it sit for a while before do more revisions. That's just me though.

    1. I often like to revise right away too, but since this is already a revision, I can't do much more on my own.

  4. Congrats on finishing. I know what you mean you get to the stage when you think 'OK what now' don't you! I'd probably take a day or two and then start something new.

    1. Guilty as charged... I think I've already started the new project. Wonder why I can't just sit down and relax?

  5. Congrats on finishing! I'm sure interesting ideas will pop up soon and beg to be written.
Meanwhile, I'm way too busy sitting in front of the tv and stuffing my face with bon-bons to worry about my next project(s).
And where can I get a pair of scrolling-eyelids like yours? For me, writing is always like going to the dentist. Ugh, and painful. No wonder I'm not excited to start doing it again...

  6. Congratulations.
I'd take a break, recharge your batteries, get some new experiences as material for your next novel.
